Any Earthly Branch has a recipe, that is, it is made up of or contains a mixture of elements. Sometimes I think of the Hidden Stems as the root of all that is possible or happening in a Ba Zi. Hidden Stems can also help you learn about timing as your studies progress to forecasting. Knowing which Stems are hidden in the Branch supports nuance in interpretation, as well as increasing your understanding of the system of Ba Zi.
