Precedents, Presidents, and Vice Presidents

Tuesday November 3rd 2020 is almost here. We all want to know what’s going to happen.

I already missed my chance to forecast the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett whose Ba Zi immediately gives away that in terms of her work/job, 2021 is probably the most significant year ever. I chickened out.

As Amy Coney Barrett was born in a Water Rat year (1972) it’s hard to ignore that the Ingratitude Penalty is built into her maiden name Coney, which is another name for rabbit. The Ingratitude Penalty between Rat and Rabbit has to do with intergenerational values that are shared or not, and how that is perceived by each party.

The Rabbit branch in a Ba Zi sometimes signifies a Mother. Being the oldest and a daughter in a family with seven children, I expect Amy may still take issue with hers. This might have to do with her mother’s work outside the home. I would go so far as to guess Amy was born in the Rabbit hour (5-7am). That might explain a lot. Maybe she’ll have a change of heart in 2023.

Apparently I’m still trying to distract from what I’m writing about here. I’m a little nervous but it’s now or never if I want to forecast the election.

2020 US Presidential Election

First of all, don’t expect a quick resolution. I don’t think you need to be a diviner to pick up on that. It’s going to be messy.

What I do know is that every Qi Men Dun Jia pan I’ve drafted around the question of the 2020 Presidential election since early 2019 has indicated we will have a woman for President in 2021. I have to admit I kind of gave up on my interpretation once Elizabeth Warren dropped out. I think that was a big mistake – me being led astray by what I wanted to happen instead of considering how it could happen that a woman would be the “winner”. Sometimes I give up too easily.

Simply looking at the history of US Presidential elections in a Metal Rat year like 2020 (1840, 1900, 1960) it seems pretty clear that whoever is elected is probably not going to remain in office for a full term. If you don’t know what I mean, I’m referring to the pattern you can see with William Henry Harrison, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy.

So what’s my point here? Since we’re looking at similar cycles in time, we can probably expect some iteration of what came before, and of course, the character of the VP who succeeds is very important too.

10th US President
John Tyler, who succeeded Harrison, set the precedent for how we handle the death of a sitting President. Harrison was the first President to die in office. John Tyler’s actions paved the way for the 25th amendment which deals with exactly this situation. Being a Constructionist and believer in Manifest Destiny, Tyler rushed to take the oath and assume full Presidential powers before a potential Constitutional crisis could occur.

26th US President
It was Teddy Roosevelt who took over for McKinley. We mostly know Teddy Roosevelt for his work of establishing the National Parks. He is also known for the Three Cs: Conservation of Natural Resources, Control of Corporations, Consumer Protection. Teddy Roosevelt’s agenda is interesting and desirable to me as a possible outcome. His Square Deal sounds made to order for 2021. Roosevelt was a proponent of changing the rules of commerce to equalize opportunity and reward – to include a wider range of recipients and beneficiaries. Teddy had a concern about “the representatives of predatory wealth”. Sound familiar?

36th US President
Lyndon B. Johnson, successor of JFK, having already been involved in the passing of the Civil Rights Act, was hoping for a “Great Society”. To build it, he was looking to support further civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, education, the arts, urban and rural development, and public services. LBJ waged a “War on Poverty” by helping millions of Americans rise above the poverty line. He worked to ban racial discrimination in the housing market and even backed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 to encourage and welcome immigrants from non-European countries. All of his domestic policy work is overshadowed, in some circles, by his escalation of American participation in the Viet Nam war. There’s no perfect President. We already know that.

Now it’s 2020. Who will be the 46th US President? I like to frame the question that way if you get my drift.

What if I actually interpreted my QMDJ pans correctly and our first woman President comes into office in 2021? That would be Kamala Harris. Based on her Ba Zi, I think she may take office in the Sheep month (July 7th-August 7th). Kamala’s Ba Zi indicates that an Ox year could be the start of something big, but not until July. I’d say Kamala’s current Da Yun (Big Fate) supports that right now, but I don’t see her being elected in 2024.

Simply based on her year pillar Wood Dragon, it’s easy to understand why so many have the impression of her as a powerful person who might be into power for power’s sake. On the plus side, her power is real. Her job is based on it. The only person that can get in Kamala Harris’ way is Kamala Harris. It remains to be seen what she has learned over the years. I’ll just leave that there.

If I’m wrong about the outcome of the election, I’ll learn from that. If I’m right, watch for further analysis of Kamala Harris’ Ba Zi. Until then, I wish you love and peace.

Water Horse, Willow Tree

The coming Water Horse month starts Friday afternoon. That’s June 5th. The Full Moon arrives that day along with a penumbral lunar eclipse. June 6th suggests hoped for but unexpected good news. My calendar tells me this month is going to be better than the Snake month for sure. There are many more good days for everyone.

Having said that, I want to tell you now that June 21st, the summer solstice, is probably the most difficult day of the month. There’s a solar eclipse that day. It’s a Remove Day and it carries tendencies of self harm, of going along to get along and the damage inflicted.

If you’re following the Chinese calendar, it’s the day before the solstice sets the stage. That’s the 20th which is called a 4 Separating Day. Some masters think you can get rid of those who are harassing you on Separating days. On the west coast of the United States, the New Moon at 23:41 is close to the timing of the solar eclipse. Being a Wood Horse day, it’s also called a Year Breaker. In spite of these portents it’s still rated as a pretty good day. The day matches the Wood Horse pillar in Trump’s Ba Zi which is key as to how the chart functions.

One way to interpret these omens is that there are multiple big events about to go down quickly. This is scary but not necessarily negative. There’s a new start for women where there’s an ending for men. I’m curious to see what will happen. Clearly something or someone is trying to get out attention. Could this be our mandate of heaven? Can we finally shift the balance of power?

It’s a Fire Rat day as I write this. In Ba Zi the relationship of the Fire Rat and the Water Horse is called Fan Yin; a clash from top to bottom. I know we can all feel that. It’s hard to write these words without weeping because my yearning for the finish line is so strong.

This may be true for all Horses but I think for the Water Horse there’s often a risk around endings. That applies to the Water Horse month too. Can we make it a finish line for sheltering in place? Can we make it a finish line for the misuse of power? It’s the finish line where the Horse’s most embarrassing mistakes often happen; where you’ve already won the race but… A Horse problem could be that without crossing the finish line the race never ends. A Horse may cultivate that kind of indecision.

The Lap Yum for this month, which is a phrase that summarizes the Water Horse, is Willow Tree. Willow Tree implies tears which could be a result of either a helpful wake up call or a disappointment. I think these are the tears and sadness that sometimes accompany the most important insights about ourselves. Could be tears of anger or embarrassment too. You can make a choice about this. Make it into something you want.

A clash of Water and Fire is filled with brilliant and progressive ideas if the balance of power is right. When the ideas can be bridged by the Wood element, it becomes a self sustaining system for the Horse. That’s joy.

How can you be part of the revolution? Speak softly and carry a big stick. Let’s say the big stick is kindness; the kindness that is the very least that those of us who are white or privileged can give at this moment in time.

Kindness isn’t necessarily being nice. On the yin side kindness is actively making space for others to thrive. Perhaps the yang side goes so far as to shelter and defend that space. Kindness is knowing when you have enough and someone else doesn’t, and that you are not diminished by foregoing or deferring. The smallest kindness might be simply getting the hell out of the way: your own or another’s.

The challenges of the coming month are both knowing when to quit and knowing when to step on the accelerator. The Water Horse carries a lot of North vs South stuff as does the USA, and yes I’m thinking slavery is part of that. One possible meaning of the Water Horse pillar is “sitting on or controlling the money”. That applies too.

This Water Horse month says it’s time to face up to the embarrassing facts about racism and who sits on the money. If we want change we will need to choose it. That’s a movement. If you’re looking for a simple solution, you can use the Wood element as a bridge. Make space for all. Protect and shelter the space. That’s kindness.

Some would say your advantage this year is luck. Some would say it’s unfair. What’s relevant is what you do with it. Look up from your workload for a moment with compassion instead of judgment. Naiveté isn’t much help when dishonesty might be your trigger.
Hint: Give with intention to someone who is struggling. Whether or not it’s “real” isn’t going to diminish you.

寅 Tiger

Tigers will likely be the first to spot the latest round of spin this month. This year Tigers are feeling the Kassandra effect because others are slower to pick up the relevant patterns. Kind of lonely I know but better times are coming next month. Hang in there.
Hint: Spread your message. Fight without putting yourself at physical risk. We need you.

卯 Rabbit

辰 Dragon

The Dragon doesn’t want an apprentice but the Snake is always there as the yin to your yang. You may worry about their influence on your reputation but the right Snake, chosen carefully, could actually enhance it. Will you make the investment of trust required?
Hint: Swallow your pride and do some soul searching if you want that. This won’t work without your attention.
