Fire Rooster Month – The Body Again

Fire Rooster Month poster with a rooster silhouette, flame, and meetup details: Saturday Sept 5, 9–10 am PDT (Seattle time).

The Fire Rooster month begins on Monday September 7th. Join us for the Monthly Meetup on Saturday September 5th from 9-10 am PDT (Seattle time).

The last time we had an extended period of Fire Rooster energy was 2017. That was the first year of Trump’s first presidency. That year, there was a total solar eclipse with a path of totality that crossed the United States from approximately Oregon to South Carolina, effectively splitting the nation into north and south. Maybe we have been in a civil war since then. This is something we discussed at the Monthly Meetup last month.

Among the topics up for discussion this month:

  • Hexagram 31 Xian 咸 or Gan 感?
  • Upper Canon/Lower Canon
  • Blue Lagoon
  • The Body Again
  • The Nature of Fire Rooster pillar
  • What’s a Water Dragon got to do with it?
  • Flying Stars and Fu Yin
  • Your Questions
  • As many practical applications of BaZi as possible

The Monthly Meetup is a monthly Chinese astrology discussion group that is included with a subscription to the Monthly Guide. You can also sign up here to attend a single meetup and receive a single copy of the Guide.

Hexagram 40 解 Jie : Deliver Us From Evil

Deliver Us?

On the top of Hexagram 40, sometimes called Relief or Release, we have the trigram for Thunder. On the bottom is the Kan trigram, representing Water or Abyss. In terms of symbolism, we might see this as a dark thunderstorm and the kind of tension release it provides. The storm may be scary. It might be relieving some extreme heat. Hexagram 40 is describing what happens when we get relief; a symbol of a new cycle beginning.

Perhaps tomorrow’s solar eclipse will give us more clues about that.

Jie pairs with Hexagram 39 Jian (Difficulty or Hardship). In this pairing the hardship (or evil) is something we might create for ourselves through our excessive pursuit of pleasure. Sounds like where we are now. Jie releases.

An earlier meaning of Jie can be derived from the ideograph 解. On the left side is a horn. On the bottom right side of the ideograph we can see the character for Ox, above it is a knife. The idea is that a piece of the the horn can be used to loosen or cut a knot; to alleviate or release. In a case where we cannot untie the knot, although it may seem extreme, we can cut it or loosen it by taking strong action.

Hexagram 40 is sometimes called Deliverance. Like the movie that has the same name, it embodies the experience of what we might discover about ourselves when we have been going through extreme trials or traumas and what we learn or perceive about ourselves during and after. Extreme challenges or hindrances can unlock our hidden strengths and unexpressed talents. We might discover that we are capable of things we never dreamed of. Our perceptions of ourselves are loosened by hardships or illness. The urge to survive or have a chance to begin again gives us access to greater achievements. It might deliver us from evil.

In the movie Deliverance*, obviously there is a dark side to this. But let’s think instead of how Jie might unlock potentials in us. We might not feel comfortable with fully knowing what we are capable of; on the other hand, there are times when a difficult situation calls for cutting through. Sometimes getting out of a difficult situation calls for measures we wouldn’t normally take. For example, when someone gets gum in their hair, they could spend hours trying different ways to get the gum out. If you’re feeling bold you might cut it out or even have your hair cut in a new style.

Most of the time, the majority of us wouldn’t think of the “extreme” solution as the first one to try. This is something that you read of heroes or gods doing, so how would you dare? There are times when it will make sense. Maybe you’ve heard of the Gordian Knot metaphor?

Cutting Through

The story of the Gordian Knot goes that there was an ancient oracle in Turkey in the city of Gordium who prophesied that whoever could untie a very intricate knot fastening an old oxcart would become the ruler of all of Asia.

The knot was tied so that there were no visible ends to work with; it wasn’t clear where or how to begin. For hundreds of years, people tried to unravel the knot, but no one succeeded until Alexander the Great came along and cut the knot in two with his sword. He perceived that the means of loosening the knot was less important than getting the desired outcome. Alexander the Great did conquer some of Asia, but not all of it, however, this seemingly rash act did allow him to fulfill his destiny. He was considered a hero.

To be a hero, either for yourself or on behalf of others in these modern times might require the same kind of thinking.

Some radical actions (even destruction) are needed to create relief – to get us out of this knot we have tangled. Instead of untangling, we can look for other solutions that would seem unpalatable given less pressing circumstances. For many of us, we may be reluctant to take drastic measures because of what those actions might say about our character. In these times, it seems urgent to take bold and unusual or even extreme actions. Remember, extreme is a relative term, meaning relative to you.

In life there are times when it’s appropriate to choose common sense over what we have held “sacred”. It’s time to stop thinking about how things have always been and to start thinking about how things are right now.

“We cared only for the now which is the same thing as being the eternal.”
Virginia Woolf

What time is it where you are? In 2026, that’s my working definition of now. Changes happen fast. Just imagine what you could do with that energy in terms of what you want. Let’s make some new mistakes – the kind we’ve never made before.

Like I always say, if there’s a Deus Ex Machina it’s us.

*released in 1972 which was a 壬子 (Water Rat) year! The Fire Horse year gives an interesting context of clash.

Horse

Birth Years: 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
Birth Month: June roughly.
Make Fire favorable to you. You might be triggered, so the best thing to do is direct your actions safely. Trying not to act could be destructive – like holding a sneeze.
Hint: Get the kind of attention you want, not just any old attention. Be specific.

Sheep

Birth Years: 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027
Birth Month: July roughly.
You may feel compelled or controlled by circumstance. Careful with stubbornness around letting go. Being lucky doesn’t always mean easy, and this month opportunities abound – especially for Metal Sheep.
Hint: Don’t miss out on the joy, passion and compassion.

Monkey

Birth Years: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028
Birth Month: August roughly.
Good news! If your shape got shifted a little too much last month, this month favors refining the form you’re looking for. You have more support for your agency than usual. You are the boss of you!
Hint: Focus your attention on what you want. Do it, then do more of it. Don’t overdo it.

Rooster

Birth Years: 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029
Birth Month: September roughly.
The Horse is here to give you that melting feeling again. If you fell in love now, what if it meant that you’re starting from a place of power equity? I think you would like that.
Hint: Do you need one? Horses are pretty obvious.

Dog

Birth Years: 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030
Birth Month: October roughly.
Not much changes for the Dog this month, other than you may realize how much you are important for the success of others, how you can move them forward, and how their success supports/protects you.
Hint: Stand down a little and rediscover the joy of being on a like-minded team.

Pig

Birth Years: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031

Birth Years: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032
Birth Month: December roughly.
It’s your turn to be clashed which for the Rat simply means drying up a little. That might be okay with you. If it’s too hot and/or you feel depleted, go to the Water.
Hint: Careful with decision making around the summer solstice when your mind could be cloudy.

Ox

Birth Years: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Birth Month: January roughly.
Maybe you’re sensing that a blockage is coming? The pillar where you have the Ox will indicate what this could be about. Who is close to you that is being clashed now? This blockage may be related.
Hint: Make a pre-emptive strike on potential problems that come next month. Maybe all you can do is plan.

Tiger

Birth Years: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034
Birth Month: February roughly.
Wins come naturally this month when you express yourself. You can do this on behalf of yourself or others. Aggression is fine, but being mean is not really you is it?
Hint: Mistakes were made. If you’re changing sides, this is the time to make that choice.

Rabbit

Birth Years: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035
Birth Month: March roughly.
Revisiting a breakup from March? This could be literal if the person is showing up in your life again. This year it’s probably more than thoughts.
Hint: Love shouldn’t cost your integrity. Self-sacrifice is not usually the way.

Dragon

Birth Years: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
Birth Month: April roughly.
Time to bounce again. Remember those doubts you had in April? Well now you know a lot more. Maybe you don’t need to work harder. See what the days offer.
Hint: The landings are easier if you can maintain your flexibility. It’s okay to rest and receive.

Snake

Birth Years: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
Birth Month: May roughly.
Now you’re officially done with the Snake year. This month provides an opportunity to work on what people know about you and how they think of your work. Find a warm place and park.
Hint: If you are trying to hide things, it could work for now.

Bazi Classes for May 2026

I’m offering two bazi classes in May for those who are familiar with the basics and are ready to go a step further. In both classes we will talk about the “rules” as well as what it might be like to experience these concepts in real life.

Penalty, Punishment, Harm and Destruction – Saturday May 16th 9-11 am PDT (Seattle time)

In assessing a person’s life situation, these are important concepts to address. Sometimes the elemental dynamics turn out to be supportive and welcome in some way.

Twelve Life Stages – Saturday May 30th 9-11 am PDT (Seattle time)

As is the case with humans, every element has Life Stages that follow a cycle. We can interpret the timing of elements as they relate to the course of a life, which elements are most vibrant in a chart and which are not.

To receive notifications about future classes and events, subscribe to the blog. If you’re looking for free access to daily Chinese Astrology subscribe to the Serious Dailies.

12 Animal Fortunes for the Water Snake Month

Water Snake 癸巳 Month
May 5th 19:49-June 5th 23:48

Here are the Animal Fortunes for the month of the Water Snake. To get the most out of the fortunes you’ll want to know all four of your pillars which are based on your birth year, month, day and time.

If you don’t know your Four Pillars, just ask!

Each of the four animals of your BaZi correlates with an aspect of your life. Start with that interpretation.

If you’d like to know more about how bazi works, take a class with me. If you want to know more about your own bazi, book a reading here. Most of the people I work with get a reading at least once a year.

For even more Chinese Astrology join us for the next Monthly Meetup on Saturday May 9th 9-10 am PDT. That’s Seattle time.

Pillars and Fortunes

Year Pillar

Has to do with your physical body and what you do with it, ancestors, family traits. In terms of luck the year pillar is said to take the first “hit” of any event, good or bad.

Month Pillar

Relates to career, work environment, training, age mates and peers, siblings, exes and your modus operandi

Day Pillar

Yourself and true partner; your immediate environment and home life.

Hour Pillar

Your innermost self, your children, future, hopes and dreams.

The Fortunes

Snake

Birth Years: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
Birth Month: May roughly.
For better or worse, “they know” what you did last year. Better means reaping benefits, worse means facing the consequences you thought you could avoid. By now, you know which one you’re going to get this year.
Hint: Occult hits different now.

Horse

Years: 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
Month: June roughly.
Your slow might be someone else’s fast. Sharing the spotlight doesn’t mean someone is in your way. Be careful this month about how quickly you discard, delete or dump.
Hint: You might be doing it too soon.

Sheep

Years: 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027
Month: July roughly.
Now it’s time for something completely different – or at least new! Collect debts. Schedule important meetings. Do things that enhance your health. Avoid activities that you wouldn’t want to repeat.
Hint: If you want to do more gardening, do more gardening.

Monkey

Years: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028
Month: August roughly.
Actively promote and seek equity in your relationships. It might be as simple as improving your communication. Stick up for yourself without fighting. You’re not betrayed.
Hint: Old habits may beckon but you can break them.

Rooster

Years: 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029
Month: September roughly.
Time to make some alliances, again. Try it, I think you will like it. That’s what you’ll do if you want to continue being invited to the table. You have the power to focus the qi this month.
Hint: Use it for important things.

Dog

Years: 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030
Month: October roughly.
Opportunities in general and opportunities for alliance come and go quickly this month. Be ready to show up when scheduled or miss out. Start things.
Hint: If possible, avoid tapping into your storage of resources (including money) for now.

Pig

Years: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031
Month: November roughly.
There’s some business from 2025 that claims to be unfinished. An accusation? You could reject that energy or you could let yourself accept a little more change when the emotion comes.
Hint: If all else fails, pursue unseriousness and festivities.

Rat

Years: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032
Month: December roughly.
Building up to peak clash means things feel uncertain, maybe more so than usual. Plan and prepare. Change your position if you want a new perspective. Pray.
Hint: Take apart old belief systems as needed. What is no longer true for you?

Ox

Years: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Month: January roughly.
With the Snake present you get some of the best rewards. With the Horse present, this may come in the form of relief rather than gain.
Hint: It’s all about family and relationships this month. If you can’t say anything nice…you know the rest.

Tiger

Years: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034
Month: February roughly.
Acceptance is what provides the chance to get the reward without the penalty. Careful of turning your flame on others except as a petition. Keep your mind open to the unexpected – in a good way.
Hint: You don’t have to take. If you ask it will be given.

Rabbit

Years: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035
Month: March roughly.
Do people even know what you do when you’re not taking care of others? Do you? Show off creations, make invitations, organize events. Opportunities are brief.
Hint: What if you made it all about you?

Dragon

Years: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
Month: April roughly.
Share the news about whatever you’ve been working on. How are your PR materials? Focus on what is accomplished already. It’s not the time to start new things.
Hint: If there’s something you would prefer to bury (a feud?) do it now.
