12 Animal Fortunes for the Earth Snake Month

Earth Snake 己巳 Month
May 5th 08:22-June 5th 12:34

Here are the Animal Fortunes for the month of the Earth Snake. To get the most out of the fortunes you’ll want to know all four of your pillars which are based on your birth year, month, day and time.

If you don’t know them just ask! Each of the four animals of your BaZi correlates with an aspect of your life.

Year Pillar
Has to do with your physical body and what you do with it, ancestors, family traits. In terms of luck the year pillar is said to take the first “hit” of any event, good or bad.

Month Pillar
Relates to career, work environment, training, age mates and peers, siblings, exes and your modus operandi

Day Pillar
Yourself and true partner; your immediate environment and home life.

Hour Pillar
Your innermost self, your children, future, hopes and dreams.

Rat
Years: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032

It may be helpful this month for the Rat to spend time at home and/or in the garden. Travel (especially by boat) could be too risky – that’s for your consideration.
Hint: Is your bed set up properly for the Wood Dragon year?

Ox
Years: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Month: January roughly.
If you’re an Ox who is ready to start something new, help is here! Tune out the self-doubt and do something productive or creative. If physical movement is required for the goal, even better.
Hint: What are you announcing this year? What are you sharing with the “public”?

Tiger
Years: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034

Month: March roughly.
This month, your luck is in what you can do each day. Organizing long term projects works now but starting them may have to wait. Let people know about your resourcefulness and flexibility.
Hint: Benefit by advertising your new(?) services or sharing how you have solved problems.

Dragon
Years: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
Month: April roughly.
The month demands nitty gritty calculation, production and making claims. Not the same as magic is it? For best results, tend to what you (and others) can see.
Hint: Head down for now. Work on existing projects.

Kamala Harris Ba Zi

Kamala Harris was born in a 甲辰 Wood Dragon year – like 2024. She turns 60 this year which, in the system of Chinese Astrology means she has completed the Cycle of 60 Pillars. When you turn 60 you have lived through all the possible pillars, you’ve had at least a year of every possible energetic combination and presumably you have learned from this experience. Regardless of whether that’s true, turning 60 is a starting over point. Some would say now you are like a child again. Certainly 2024 will be one of the most significant and interesting years of her life.

In such an important year, Kamala Harris is already the sitting Vice President of the United States. Unless there are unexpected events, she is pretty much guaranteed a spot on the ticket again in 2024. She has been growing her public persona since 1990 and yet, many people don’t feel like they know her. When she is more open she tends to get more criticism.

Kamala may be keeping a lower profile now than she did when she was a Senator as traditionally it is part of the Vice President’s job is to avoid stealing attention from the President. That certainly doesn’t help us get to know her, and what if she wants to be understood but not known? She is hard to read. Is that purposeful on her part or is it her fate? Are these things separate? I think her Ba Zi has a lot to tell.

After the inauguration in 2021 Kamala Harris was in the news more, unsurprisingly, not in a way that helped us get to know her. There were many rumors surrounding her settling into the White House. People said she was unfocused, difficult, inscrutable and demanding. After that, Kamala seemed to disappear in 2022 and 2023. Her day pillar suggests that may have been related to her health, but now she’s back, having started her Reproductive Freedoms Tour in January 2024.

Kamala gives the impression that she is unmoved by opposition or criticism, but she does seem to care about women, children and reproductive rights. She is interested in lowering the cost of health care. Rabbit, which is her General Star, is constantly drawn into her natal chart and these are Rabbit-related things. At the same time, I’m not sure where she stands when it comes to ending air borne diseases like Covid.*

Kamala Harris is a more powerful person than Joe Biden in many ways, although not as popular. Kamala Harris has the Ba Zi of a general, but can she be a leader in her own right? Could she ever be the President of the United States? A general could be a president in times of war.

In the process of analyzing a Ba Zi, for me a summary phrase often comes to mind. With Kamala’s Ba Zi it’s “Caring Authoritarian” and I believe this is how our next President will present, whoever it is. The caring part may be true but who is it for? We are in a time cycle that supports an authoritarian regime unless things change. I hope you don’t believe the argument that punishment can be a substitute for nurturing and support and somehow that will bring peace. This is what I worry about.

Life House   Hour Day Month Year Big Fate
yin Water yang Metal yang Water yang Wood yang Wood yang Earth

Rooster Dog Tiger Dog Dragon Dragon

Kamala is a yang Water Day stem person. All of the pillars in her chart are yang. Being a Water person, she is easily influenced by others’ feelings although maybe not their words. It’s her empathy that gets to her. This is well disguised by the Wood Dragon in her year pillar, the Wood Dog in her month pillar and the Tiger in her day pillar. Deep down, she has the Metal Dog in her hour. That’s a Kui Gang pillar – pretty handy if you want to be in politics or any game where toughness is considered a virtue. With Water Rooster in her Life House, most of her opinions and what she does are formed by her early years, somewhere around the time she went to kindergarten. Look for themes related to that for Kamala in September 2024. It may remind her of a time when she felt a public exposure or humiliation.

Even though Kamala could be considered a weak yang Water person, yang Water is inexhaustible and she has hidden reserves in the Dragon. When it comes Kamala’s helpful elements, the ones that boost her career the most are Fire and Earth. I think Earth is probably the best when it comes to her career. The healthiest element in her chart is Earth which is her power.

Kamala Harris is interested in showing you that she is smart, that what she thinks is important and maybe nothing else. If she wants to be a President, Kamala would benefit by focusing on being understood. I know she can do that, but I also think she wants to influence (or leave a mark) more than she might want to be a leader. That is curation energy.

What we experience of Kamala is filtered through her external energy and in a Ba Zi her external energy is called Qi Sha or Seven Killings. Kamala’s work merges into her public personality. It’s hard to differentiate between them. Kamala is commanding and intimidating and people don’t usually appreciate that in women. Under the surface, Kamala possesses a youthful and optimistic kind of energy that drives her high risk tolerance. She is not afraid.

Qi Sha energy functions in the contexts of conquering and taking. For Kamala, these actions are spurred by empathy and this is where I am hoping she will surprise us. She feels what other people are feeling, she feels their experience but she may not be good at gentleness. That’s okay as long as she can learn. Qi Sha also means you are very resourceful. You find or create resources for yourself. If you look at Kamala’s history and career, men help her do that whether they mean to or not.

Although Kamala has perfected the art of seeming tough, she deals with lifelong frustration and likely has experienced bouts of depression. Her thoughts are easily turned to action. Think it, do it. And yet, her actions and words are sometimes ridiculed. I expect she feels pretty lonely and misunderstood, but the Dog in her Ba Zi keeps her going regardless.

One of the most important influences for Kamala was obviously her mother who happened to name both of her daughters after goddesses – a power move! At age seven, watching Shyamala Gopalan, her mother, pursue her career while taking on single motherhood was a demonstration for Kamala of where her own possibilities began. If we interpret the year pillar as having to do with parents, there’s that Qi Sha again. She learned it from her momma.

Kamala Harris carries and seems to be comfortable with a lot of dissonance. When I look at her Ba Zi I see a person who values control more than intimacy. She is not fearful but she is familiar with worry, depression and frustration. For Kamala to stay in her comfort zone, certain appearances, and therefore compartments, must be maintained. Kamala would like you to stay at arms length away, at least, and I kind of don’t blame her. She has her reasons for feeling like she has to protect herself at all times and so she does. She’ll be the one to decide if that kind of energy will support all that she wants to experience on this second time around the wheel.

From a Ba Zi perspective, Kamala is hard to read because her year pillar is both Qi Sha and Void or Empty. Her public facing energy is Void. Wood is a Void element for Kamala and so is Earth. If both Wood and Earth are void in this chart, it’s only a small leap to think that all four pillars could be Void. It’s a fun idea to play with.

In October 2024, we will see what happens when her Void year pillar is clashed. I think we are about to learn more about Kamala Harris this year than we ever have before. Her luck in November is better than Joe Biden’s. Sometimes I wonder if that helped him win in 2020.

*When you look at her chart, ask yourself what year Kamala Harris had Covid. It’s staring you in the face.

Wood Dragon : Curation Energy

What can you say about a year from the information contained in two symbols? If you study Ba Zi, the answer to that question is: much more than I can write about in this lifetime. Let’s focus on what is relevant about the Wood Dragon pillar in 2024.

Wood Dragon Pillar

yang Wood
Dragon

The pillar consists of Heavenly Stem yang Wood sitting on top of Earthly Branch Dragon whose main element is yang Earth. Wood controls or clashes Earth. It might be a land grab.

Every pillar has a signature energy which is the interaction of the Heavenly Stem and the Earthly Branch. Within the Earthly Branch there are hidden elements that should also be considered, however, those are more readily explored in private or group study.

The image of the Wood Dragon for me is of Wood grabbing Earth and sinking down its roots. Wood has an advantage over Earth.

The relationship of the yang Wood and the yang Earth is called 七煞 Qi Sha or 7 Killings. In this case the relationship is between Wood and Earth, but any element has a Qi Sha. You can recognize it when there are clashing elements together that have the same polarity, meaning both are yin or both are yang. Qi Sha is about force and sometimes, breaking laws. When both signs are yang, the potential rewards and risks are big and out in the open. This is where we are now in 2024.

We can learn a lot about a day, a year, a month or a person by way of a single pillar. If you study Ba Zi long enough you will be able to pick out a person’s year pillar from their personality and the visual (or other) cues of age. Sometimes I watch unscripted tv just to have fun trying to guess the year pillars of the cast. For the most part, you can look up their birth information to check your work. This is a fun exercise, especially if you’re needing to rest. Rest doesn’t have to be boring.

The energy of the Wood Dragon speaks of curation, of the taking, selection or presentation of things that may not belong to you. Remember what I said about Qi Sha?

I hope you know I’m not presenting Qi Sha as morally wrong because that’s not what I think. Destruction or control is an energetic phase. It’s part of every process. It’s humans that invest it with meaning, or direct the meaning. We usually have some influence over how changes play out. We do have the capability to heal destruction but we don’t always choose it.

Curation is a natural tendency for humans because we are naturally curious. We’re always looking for patterns and we like to learn from what we find. We like to share about what we find if we think it’s good. This is probably a trait held over from hunter gatherer culture at least. Curation isn’t inherently negative.

In the past, the outcomes of curation have brought enormous benefits to students, philosophers and scholars. I think it aided survival as well. The first time that a human led another human to see a cave painting, or to their favorite berry patch, was a curation. As much as they can, caring parents curate what their children are exposed to and what they want them to learn. This is done out of seeking the advancement of your offspring, naturally. Curation has likely assisted in human evolution. How not?

Learning groups like salons were curated gatherings of smart and/or popular people who were selected to share ideas as a way of entertainment and advancement. Salons in the 21st century might include colleges and universities, summit meetings, panels of experts, very exclusive gatherings of the powerful, and expensive parties. Some curation is done in the open but I think most is not. Consider museums.

A museum is a building filled with curated objects that are deemed worthy of being collected and displayed. The curated objects are removed from their context and time, separated from their history. Once that is accomplished, they can be grouped to a curator’s liking. Their meaning may be reassigned. Museums rely on the old being made new again, by way of curation. Curators know this will attract a bigger crowd and more money.

Curation was meant for sharing but somewhere along the way it became a kind of claiming of ownership instead. Sometimes this is called appropriation. To ignore how curation harms, robs and kills cultures, lands and people would be a one sided view, wouldn’t it?

In the process of curation, a certain image is projected about the curator. A curator is a taste maker, meaning you will see their taste in what they present to you. This Wood Dragon year of 2024 is very much about curation of everything. For example, AI is a curating kind of tool, so is social media. Human Design is an example of curation too. This energy is not new or novel, it’s vibrant now.

Many of your favorite influencers are impressing you with someone else’s original content without you realizing it, but few of them will say this. It’s usually the ones that do cite sources who have the real knowledge. Most of what you might see from content creators is really an iteration of their previous work or an unattributed co-opting of others’ work. The thinking is shrinking. We seem to be in an era of accepting what is curated. The shrinking of thinking.

Curation can be used to influence you as to what is good and what is bad, what is normal and what is not. Curation involves both affirmations and negations. Curation energy can be seen in the context of buying trends, boycotts, videos, photos, music, writing, ideas and maybe most importantly, land, cultures, knowledge and information. The list is too long to be written here, but TikTok is rich with the curation phenomena should you want more examples.

In 2024, I challenge you to chase sources and source materials. Consider what human intention is behind the curation. Instead of having a pattern fed to you, find it yourself. Invest it with your own meaning and grow it. We could use something new.

2024 US Presidential Election

I’ve recently published a couple of posts about US Presidential Elections and Ba Zi. One about the pattern of our elections and one about the patterns of elections held in a Dragon year. You may want to read those first. In this article I will focus on election results in a Wood Dragon year, starting with general considerations. and then working down to a Wood Dragon year like this one. What I mean is, not all Wood Dragon years occur in time cycle like the one we are in, so you want to focus on the ones that do.

2024 is a Wood Dragon year in the Chinese Calendar. The pillar consists of yang Wood sitting on top of the Dragon whose main element is yang Earth. Wood controls or clashes Earth.

yang Wood
Dragon

The image here for me is of Wood grabbing Earth and sinking down its roots. Wood has an advantage over Earth. What might that say about who will win the election?

The relationship of the yang Wood and the yang Earth is called 七煞 Qi Sha or 7 Killings. In this case the relationship is between Wood and Earth, but any element has a Qi Sha. You can recognize it when there are clashing elements together that have the same polarity, meaning both are yin or both are yang. Qi Sha is about force and sometimes, breaking laws. When both signs are yang, the potential rewards and risks are big and out in the open. This is where we are now.

Generally speaking, if you want to be the leader of a country, it helps to have that Qi Sha energy. Remember, I didn’t make these rules.

US Presidential Election of 2024

If you want more clues about who will win, you might start by looking at the election results of past Dragon years to find a pattern. We already know that Monkey, Rat, and Rooster have special privileges when it comes to the Dragon. It seems to be helpful to have the Wood element or potential Wood element in the year pillar.

Although Monkeys are favored in Dragon years so far only one Monkey was elected in a Dragon year and that was Lyndon B. Johnson. As of now in 2024, there are no Monkeys in the running.

In a Dragon year, generally speaking the Dragon is not favored. It seems unlikely that Marianne Williamson, a 1952 Water Dragon, can win. She’s resumed campaigning as I write this, having already dropped out once. Is it a self clash? Or is she finally putting herself in service with her campaign that is said to be about ideas and not winning?

Current Vice President Kamala Harris is a 1964 Wood Dragon. Kamala doesn’t seem have a good chance to be elected President, but she might have a shot at being the President anyway. She has the Wood. Wood is what she does. Her birth year matches this Wood Dragon year. Kamala Harris will be on the ticket as VP nominee with Biden again in 2024. Her Ba Zi makes me think there might be more in store for her this year than that, and despite the self clash, Dragons do get some good luck in a Dragon year. Woodrow Wilson was born in a Fire Dragon year and elected 60 years later in a Fire Dragon year.

As for Rats, there are two who have won the US Presidential election in a Dragon year. That would be Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, both born in a Wood Rat year. That would have made 1972 Water Rat Nikki Hayley the Rat to watch but she has ended her campaign. Still, the Rat is usually the main influencer in the US.

Only one Rooster has ever been elected President, that’s Fire Rooster Grover Cleveland, elected for the second time in a Water Dragon year of course! There is one Rooster running now and that’s Claudia De La Cruz, born in a Metal Rooster year.

For me, Robert F Kennedy Jr who was born in January 1954 has a Horse like physicality, however, in a political arena any Kennedy tends to Snake. Those are their ancestors. Maybe RFK Jr has the Wood but is it robust enough? Would you read him as Wood Horse or Water Snake? I can see tendencies of both.

Born in 1953, Cornel West is a Water Snake. Maybe we can summarize his personality best as politician and philosopher. People have been anxious to write him off due to his “interesting” personal life but he’s no different than any of these other guys. He recently announced Dr. Melina Abdullah who was born in a Water Rat year as his running mate. She was born in a Rooster month. Maybe her luck is better than his.

If Wood is a helpful element to have in the year pillar when you’re running for election in a Dragon year, Joe Biden, a 1942 Water Horse is lucky.* Speaking of Wood, what about 1950 Metal Tiger Jill Stein?

And finally, let’s address the woolly mammoth in the room, that is, Trump. Trump was born in a Fire Dog year which means this year is a clash for him. Trump has no Wood in his year pillar. I really doubt he can be elected but as I said, there have been people born in a Dog year elected in a Dragon year: Wood Dog Herbert Hoover won in 1928 and George H.W. Bush (Fire Dog) in 1988. Those were elections held in Earth Dragon years. The 戊辰 Earth Dragon pillar always reminds me of something like a Dog on top of a Dragon so…maybe that’s what it takes. Herbert Hoover does have that Wood in his year pillar though.

Since I do think we’re due for a woman President soon, let’s ask President Gerald Ford how that might happen. All I can say is, this scenario put forward also is plausible, however, it’s all going to come down to timing isn’t it?

A couple of thoughts:
When a VP assumes the office of President mid term, in the next election they are the incumbent which is an advantage but not a guarantee.

I don’t think it has ever happened that a VP has taken over for a President elect, meaning they are not yet inaugurated. Do let me know if I’m wrong about that!

Possible Correlations Between US Presidential Elections of 1844 and 2024

Now, if we want to use history to inform the forecast, the Wood Dragon year that stands out most as relevant to 2024 is 1844 when James K. Polk was elected. Obviously 2024 will not be a replay of 1844, however, we should see some similar events.

James Polk Facts

James Polk was born in a Wood Rabbit year which actually points us to an important clue: most of the candidates who win in a Dragon year have the Wood element or potential Wood element in their year pillar in the Heavenly Stem or Earthly branch. Candidates with this quality may have an edge. Remember what I said about Qi Sha.

1.  Polk entered his party’s convention as a potential nominee for vice president but emerged as a compromise to head the ticket when no presidential candidate could gain the necessary two-thirds majority.

James Polk entered the convention as nominee for Vice President and ended up being the President.

Given the health status of Biden and Trump, whoever is in the VP position this year may have a good chance to end up as the President. That includes Kamala Harris for sure. Robert F Kennedy Jr. has chosen Nicole Shanahan as his running mate. I expect Donald Trump will see the advantage of selecting a woman as his VP nominee too. The other Presidential candidates are women. It seems likely we could have a woman president.

2.  Polk is known for extending the territory of the United States through the Mexican–American War during his presidency, annexing the Republic of Texas, the Oregon Territory, and the Mexican Cession after winning the Mexican–American War.

During his presidency Polk waged war on the south.

James Polk’s land grab increased the disparity of the distribution of wealth and power in the United States. Note how the land now called Texas was involved. Whoever wins will probably continue with border walls and land grabs.

The way that Polk took big parcels of land from indigenous peoples during his single term suggests the Wood Dragon of 2024 involves the beginning of a land grab. Regardless of whether U.S. citizens are the occupiers of land that is grabbed in 2024, we already know that the U.S. is involved in the grabbing.

3.  Polk helped make the U.S. a nation poised to become a world power, but with divisions between free and slave states gravely exacerbated, setting the stage for the Civil War.

This kind of energy follows the Water pattern of US Presidential elections and the influence of the Rat.The influence of the Rat is prevalent in a Dragon year.

By increasing the wealth/power gaps, James Polk set up supportive circumstances for future conflict between north and south.

Unfortunately, it’s not hard to imagine plausible and even likely scenarios where all three of these things could happen in 2024 or following years regardless of who is the US President. People who seem to know more about time than I do say that the future is what shapes the past and not vice versa. If that’s true, and the outcome is the same regardless of who is President, does it matter who wins?

Like Lucretius, who believes that the swerve of an atom can influence important events, I think it does matter who wins. I don’t believe everything about the future is fixed; there is some flexibility. With the Dragon present this year you never know what quick changes might happen and what good could come from them if we had a new kind of leader. To summarize, I think ultimately a woman will be serving as number 47. Kamala Harris seems to have a good chance to be the one, although I’m not sure she wants that.

Hint: If you’re putting things off until next month, that might be a mistake.

Rat
Years: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032
Month: December roughly.
Who will empower a Rat? A Dragon of course. Start something important you’ve been planning to do. This might be the most powerful month of the year for you.
Hint: Luck increases if you assist future generations, your own descendants or others’.

Ox
Years: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Month: January roughly.
What the Ox has been worrying about since January finally shows itself openly this month. Is the “breakup” going to happen? Navigation will be easier if you follow your observations and instincts.
Hint: Be in the moment as much as possible. There are rewards too.

Tiger
Years: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034
Month: February roughly.
Tigers could be caught up with empowering others. There are two who might want this from you now. If you want to cooperate, make it a short-term situation.
Hint: You may not think you want/need it, but set up an end point where you can reassess your role.

Rabbit
Years: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035
Month: March roughly.
The first real time out for the Rabbit since November 2022. Since then, what has fallen by the wayside? What are you doing that’s new? Does everyone know? Do you?
Hint: If you want to access new energy, make these things official by spreading the word.

US Presidential Elections : Dragon Years

In the United States, Presidential elections are held every four years. The first Presidential election was held in 1788, an Earth Monkey year. Because the Chinese Zodiac follows a 12 year cycle, this timing set the precedent for US Presidential elections being held in Monkey, Rat and Dragon years. You can read more about that and view the results of past US Presidential Elections here.

In this post I will focus on US Presidential election winners from Dragon year elections.

If you’re familiar with Ba Zi, you can already identify the underlying Monkey-Rat-Dragon pattern of election years. The pattern suggests who will be lucky and who will not in a Dragon year. As for other patterns, our sample for identifying them is pretty small. Luckily this is astrology not statistics.

If you want to know who will win in a Monkey, Rat or Dragon year it will help to focus on past winners in each of those years.

In a Dragon year, the Rooster, Monkey, and Rat are favored while the Dragon is not. The Dog, who is clashed by the Dragon, is not favored either but Dogs have been elected in Dragon years.*

While the Dragon is not generally favored, there is one Dragon who was elected in a Dragon year and that is Woodrow Wilson. He was born in a Fire Dragon year and elected in a Fire Dragon year. Maybe if your year exactly matches the election year you can become the President.

There is no one sign that has an excess of wins but there is a pattern that has to do with Wood. Do you see it? Take a look before you read on.

When you examine the table above, what seems most consistent about the winners in a Dragon year is that they have the Wood element (or potential Wood) in their birth year. Wood controls Earth.

US Presidential Elections and Ba Zi

The system of Chinese Astrology known as Ba Zi can be applied in analyzing any pattern and predicting a likely outcome. How might it be applied to the four year pattern of United States Presidential elections?

America’s birthday is generally reckoned to be July 4, 1776. That was a Fire Monkey year (like 2016). The Fire Monkey is the year pillar of the United States and the sign of Monkey usually means something new is starting. Did you know that 1776 was not the year of the first election? The first Presidential election wasn’t held until December 1788, an Earth Monkey year.

The Chinese Zodiac consists of 12 Animals or Earthly Branches. Because the first election was held in a Monkey year, a pattern was established so that the US elections are held only in Monkey, Rat or Dragon years.

In a Ba Zi, Monkey-Rat-Dragon is a Water pattern. America is a country that embodies the Metal element, therefore elections are our expression. To be more clear, we see elections as a way of expressing ourselves, our approval and disapproval. We seek a common level that is unlikely to be achieved. Any election includes some drama and lots of words. So many words.

The Water pattern tends to emphasize the enforcement of inequities toward the Fire element that is endemic to the United States. We tend to kill, oppress and deprive the indigenous and the people in the south. This is part of the pattern. The pattern tells you about the character.

Following the rules of Ba Zi, it is possible to identify who might be lucky and who might not based on whether the year is Monkey, Rat or Dragon. This method illustrates how external or annual energy is helpful in a generic way. You could also call that timing.

For elections held in Monkey years, Snake, Monkey, Rat and Dragon have an edge.
For elections held in Rat years the Ox, Monkey, Rat and Dragon are lucky.
For elections held in Dragon years Rooster, Monkey and Rat are favored.

Don’t get stuck on these rules, rather use them as a starting point. Sometimes being clashed is helpful too or there would be no Tiger, Horse or Dog as Presidents. I suspect that if you’ve managed to get the nomination and your year pillar matches the election year pillar, you can win against the rules of who is favored.

As always, looking at history is a good way to refine your perception of the pattern. Using the pattern of election years, along with the pattern of who wins in what year, provides a starting place for a deeper dive.

For example, even though they might not be favored in most years, Snake is the year pillar that seems to have a slight edge when it comes to being elected. Snakes have won in six elections, so has the Rat who is favored every time. The elemental flexibility of the Snake is often the sign of a politician. The Snake can weave a spell with persuasive words, but can keep their own counsel when it’s advantageous. It turns out that’s a helpful trait when you want a powerful position.

Maybe the Snake is more successful because the year pillar of the United States is Fire Monkey. In a visual interpretation of the pillar it’s as if the Snake is sitting on top of the Monkey. The relationship of Monkey and Snake is called Secret Friends. It’s also known as one of the Six Destructions. Things get explosive at times between the Monkey and Snake. Our country is prone multiple breakups and reunions. We want to be united, but we’re mutually suspicious, sometimes for very good reasons. This is the relationship of Monkey and Snake.

After the Snake and Rat, we have Dog and Pig tied with five wins each. Ox, Tiger and Horse have four wins each. Monkey has three wins. Sheep has won twice. Two elections were won by a Rooster but it was the same Rooster: Grover Cleveland. If you understand the nature of the Rooster, it won’t surprise you that he is the only President to have won non-consecutive terms.

The Chinese Zodiac signs are listed below with the Presidents born under that sign. Each Zodiac sign has been elected at least once. What patterns do you see?

Rat Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1788 1732
Earth Monkey George Washington Water Rat

1792 1732
Water Rat George Washington Water Rat

Earth Monkey Richard Nixon Water Rat
戊申 resigned August 1974 壬子
1976 1924
Fire Dragon Jimmy Carter Wood Rat
丙辰 壬子
1988 1924
Earth Dragon George H.W. Bush Wood Rat
戊辰 甲子

The Rat is the first animal in the cycle of twelve. Appropriately, our first President George Washington, was born in a Rat year, but not a Wood Rat year. These things matter. As a Water Rat, George may have felt bearing authority to be confining and depressing. This would not be the case for Wood Rats like Jimmy Carter or George H.W. Bush.

A person born in the year of the Rat has a good chance of being elected in any election year but their influence is strong whether they are elected or not. The way I see it, a lot of the decisions made in the US are directed by the Rat’s energy. England is the country associated with the Rat so this makes historical sense too. These are the roots of our colonizer mentality.

Ox Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1880 1829
Metal Dragon Chester Arthur* Earth Ox

2008 1961
Earth Rat Barack Obama Metal Ox
戊子 辛丑

2012 1961
Water Dragon Barack Obama Metal Ox
壬辰 辛丑

Barack Obama was first elected in a Rat year. The powerful Ox is able to co-opt the Rat’s power and influence but only for a short time, so an Ox has a good chance of winning in a Rat year.

In the Metal Rat Year of 2020, a Water Horse was elected. What stops the Ox from winning might be their ephemeral popularity. It’s hard for the Ox to make it far enough to win unless they know how to show off a little.

Tiger Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year

1956 1890
Fire Monkey Dwight D. Eisenhower Metal Tiger
丙申 庚寅

You can hardly ever count a Tiger out of the running when there’s a contest.

Metal Tiger Dwight D. Eisenhower was a General in the U.S. Army before he was President. In his final speech as President he warned about the developing military-industrial complex. It may not have been the legacy he wanted, but I wonder if he ever realized his own role in its creation. That’s kind of a Tiger thing.

Rabbit Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1796 1735

‎Wood Dragon James K. Polk Wood Rabbit‎
甲辰 乙卯
1880 1831
Metal Dragon James Garfield Metal Rabbit
庚辰 Assassinated September 1881 辛卯

Obviously it’s been a long time since we valued the type of staying power the gentle Rabbit possesses. I would be surprised if a Rabbit is elected ever again. Remember what I said about Rat energy influencing elections?

Wood Rabbit and father of six children John Adams was known for his political independence or non-partisanship. The only element in his year is Wood. Just one element.

Dragon Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1848 1784
Earth Monkey Zachary Taylor Wood Dragon

1916 1856
Fire Dragon Woodrow Wilson Fire Dragon
丙辰 丙辰

1856 Fire Dragon Woodrow Wilson was a lawyer, professor, author and President of Princeton University, all prior to becoming the 28th US President. That’s a Dragon with 食神 shi shen – full of ideas; meticulous with work when it interests him.

Snake Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1840 1772
Metal Rat William H. Harrison Water Snake
庚子 d. April 1841 癸巳

1940 1882
Metal Dragon Franklin D. Roosevelt Metal Snake
庚辰 辛巳

1960 1917
Metal Rat John F. Kennedy Fire Snake
庚子 assassinated November 1963 丁巳

I don’t know about you, but what stands out to me about Snake Presidents is that they tend to have health problems and/or are more likely to be assassinated. Maybe this is a manifestation of the potential destruction between the Monkey and Snake. Snakes might want to consider they can last longer in politics if they are less prominent.

As always in any crowd, John F. Kennedy stands out, this time because he has a Snake year, Snake month and a Yin Metal day stem. He was a tricky guy from a family of politicians. As a Metal day stem person his power is in the Snake, that is, in his ancestors, siblings and his job.

The Water-y nature of any election year tends to stimulate the Snake with promises of potential power and transformations.

Horse Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1868 1822
Earth Dragon Ulysses S. Grant Water Horse
戊辰 壬午
1872 1822
Water Monkey Ulysses S. Grant Water Horse
壬申 壬午
1876 1822
‎Fire Rat Rutherford B. Hayes Water Horse
丙子 壬午
1900 1858
Metal Rat Theodore Roosevelt* Earth Horse
庚子 VP to McKinley 戊午
1904 1858
Wood Dragon Theodore Roosevelt Earth Horse
甲辰 戊午
2020 1942
Metal Rat Joe Biden Water Horse
庚子 壬午

Elementally, it’s a Water Horse’s job to cease Fire, however, when the proportions of Water and Fire are off, the opposite might happen. In harness with Abraham Lincoln, Water Horse General Ulysses S. Grant led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War prior to becoming President. There was a LOT of burning as I recall.

On a lighter note, it’s hard not to think of 1978 when I think of Earth Horse Theodore Roosevelt. With his goofy mustache and glasses he was a precursor of 1970s men’s fashion. Teddy is also known for his promotion of national parks and preserving nature. In the 1970s we began to return to regarding the earth as a living being, rather than just a resource. That’s the spirit of the Earth Horse.

Don’t count the Horse out in a Rat election year just because they clash with the Rat. Sometimes a clash is exactly what is needed to win. Ask Joe Biden.

Sheep Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1808 1751
Earth Dragon ‎ James Madison‎ Metal Sheep
戊辰 辛未
‎1812 1751
Water Monkey James Madison Metal Sheep
壬申 辛未
1848 1800
Earth Monkey Millard Fillmore* Earth Sheep
戊申 VP to Taylor 己未

Metal Sheep James Madison was the oldest of 12 children. That’s excellent training for a Sheep who wants to be a leader. The Metal Sheep has a lot to manage. Other Sheep may prefer to be second in command, rather than number one.

Being President is not usually an aspiration of a Sheep. A closer analysis may reveal that people with a Sheep year rarely run for the office of U.S. President. Millard Fillmore, the only other Sheep to be President assumed office due to being Vice President when Zachary Taylor died.

Monkey Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1924 1872
‎Wood Rat Calvin Coolidge* Water Monkey
甲子 VP to Harding 壬申
1944 1884
Wood Monkey Harry S. Truman Wood Monkey

1960* 1908
Metal Rat Lyndon B. Johnson* Earth Monkey
庚子 VP to Kennedy 戊申
1964 1908
Wood Dragon Lyndon B. Johnson Earth Monkey
甲辰 戊申

Wood Monkey Harry S. Truman was our 33rd President. The Wood Monkey is the sign of a decision maker; could be a person who lands in what they think is a catch-22. This is a person with a dilemma.

When the decision maker is the President of the United States, the decisions have huge consequences. Might be something like making the horrible misjudgment of bombing Hiroshima. A Wood Monkey is capable of making good choices too, of course.

Rooster Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1884 1837
Wood Monkey Grover Cleveland Fire Rooster
甲申 丁酉
‎
1892 1837
Water Dragon Grover Cleveland Fire Rooster
壬辰 丁酉

1837 Fire Rooster Grover Cleveland is the only President to serve two terms non consecutively. I think his secret to success was that Yin Fire is reborn in the Rooster making the Fire Rooster more adaptable than other Roosters. They know how to stay relevant.

Dog Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1840 1790
Metal Rat John Tyler* Metal Dog
庚子 VP to Harrison 庚戌
1928 1874
Earth Dragon Herbert Hoover Wood Dog
戊辰 甲戌
1992 1946
Water Monkey Bill Clinton Fire Dog

‎1996 1946
Fire Rat Bill Clinton Fire Dog

2000 1946
Metal Dragon George W. Bush Fire Dog
庚辰 丙戌
‎2004 1946
Wood Monkey George W. Bush Fire Dog
甲申 丙戌

2016 1946
Fire Monkey Donald Trump Fire Dog
丙申 丙戌

There were only two Dogs elected before Bill Clinton won in 1992. He seems to have started a trend that was only broken by Obama. I would attribute this succession of Dogs to a bigger cycle of timing than the annual energy. Period 7 formed the way these men grew up and their attitudes about women, Period 8 put them in charge.

Pig Presidents

Election Year Winner Birth Year
1800 1743
Metal Monkey Thomas Jefferson Water Pig
庚申 癸亥

Wood Rat Thomas Jefferson Water Pig
甲子 癸亥

Metal Monkey Ronald Reagan Metal Pig
庚申 辛亥

Like electricity, too much power takes the usual checks and balances offline. When you’re powerful or popular, people hesitate to mention your crimes, that your comb over has flopped or that you’re using fatal amounts of painkillers.

The versatile and creative Pig who becomes a President has the self penalty and the power to potentially make big mistakes. Thomas Jefferson was smart and multitalented but apparently (to put it lightly) he couldn’t keep it in his pants. This seems to be a common problem for men who have too much power.

Conclusion

If you found this post useful or helpful, know also that there is more to forecasting a US Presidential election than understanding the data here. Seeing as it’s 2024 and the next US Presidential election is in November, in my next post I’ll be narrowing the focus of my investigation, writing about elections in Dragon years.

12 Animal Fortunes for the Fire Rabbit Month

Fire Rabbit 丁卯 Month
March 5th 10:21-April 4th 15:03

Here are the Animal Fortunes for the month of the Fire Rabbit. To get the most out of the fortunes you’ll want to know all four of your pillars which are based on your birth date and time.

The Fortunes

Rabbit
Years: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035
Month: March roughly.
It’s the Rabbit’s month to set the tone. If you want to save people, start with yourself. Take time off. Get some rest.
Hint: Saving people by resting?! That sounds crazy I know.

Dragon
Years: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
Month: April roughly.
When you’re a Dragon, too much Wood can wear you down. If you find you are asked to be an authority on too many things, cut back.
Hint: That’s part of being the smartest one in the room too.

Snake
Years: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
Month: May roughly.
Get to work on those constructive yet mundane things that you may not have time for later.
Hint: Be practical. Lay in supplies, metaphorical or otherwise.

Horse
Years: 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
Month: June roughly.
Horses might be reliving a mutually exhausting power exchange of last year. Relationship inequities are so annoying, still.
Hint: Breaking up is hard to do. Being free is not.

Sheep
Years: 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027
Month: July roughly.
Moving upward/forward. Alliances of mutual understanding and desires for stability fuel the Fire. We all have at least one cause in common.
Hint: One is enough to unite masses.

Monkey
Years: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028
Month: August roughly.
Times like these might make a Monkey want to “marry”. Even if it sounds crazy or too soon, why not explore that? If you find love, give yourself a taste test.
Hint: Take everything and nothing seriously.

Rooster
Years: 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029
Month: September roughly.
Roosters might be feeling skeptical about predictions of their power in 2024. Watch for speed bumps. It’s a molehill not a mountain.
Hint: It’s makeover month. Re envision yourself.

Dog
Years: 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030
Month: October roughly.
At times the Dog is harmed by the over support of their fans – meaning those who fail to tell them no. Your friends will.
Hint: If no one is ever saying you’re wrong, uh oh.

Pig
Years: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031
Month: November roughly.
Pigs are so ready for something new. Tap your network and let this Rabbit set your ambitions free. Turn your work into wealth.
Hint: Start an elemental cycle by expressing yourself!

Rat
Years: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032
Month: December roughly.
In relationships, the only constant is change. Let roles and emphasis shift back and forth. No one is like you, yet everyone is your equal in some capacity.
Hint: Sometimes you’re the cop, sometimes you’re the robber.

Ox
Years: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Month: January roughly.
In this magical time before the Dragon arrives, the Ox worries that one month isn’t enough to get all that creativity into a form that can be preserved and developed.
Hint: It’s not really execution time yet so calm down?

Tiger
Years: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034
Month: February roughly.
A general in hiding. Take a break. We don’t want the bad guys to know you’re backing the reorganization yet.
Hint: Step aside to make way for multiple leaders. Give a leg up.

The Rabbit in 2024 ~ Wood Dragon Year

Before Truth

As is the case for the Tiger, it’s unlikely to be an eventful year for the Rabbit. The focus has shifted off of you for now. Maybe you’ve got a new place to call home for a few years. I hope you were able to make that what you wanted it to be.

Rabbits are the recipients of the 息神 Rest Spirit in 2024. It is considered an auspicious star, but in these times, I hope it’s not adding to your frustration. How’s your health? As implied, the Rest Spirit means you rest and/or you have time to rest. It may be related to breath, as in catching your breath. We have experienced the Rest Spirit in the Rabbit before, most recently in March 2020.

Here’s a question for Rabbits. In March 2024 will you dive back down into the hole? Or will you hide out in plain sight? Are you going to choose yin or yang this year? Yes or No? Guess what? There is no final answer. You get to decide as you go along. You’re a Rabbit and this is your life. No one can tell you it’s wrong. No one can tell you it’s right. Do you hate that or love it?

Things feel a little bit unstable this year for the Rabbit. Maybe there’s an energy under the surface that is making you feel such connection to the tectonic shifts of the year.

For the Rabbit, it’s as if the Tiger year has returned, at least in the first half of 2024. You might feel overshadowed. The second half of the year is mostly about money and success. Again, like the Tiger, Rabbits want to be aware of the size of what you’re taking on but also not be put off by it. When progress is slow, it’s hard to imagine the growth spurts that will come later. This same Wood energy that connects you to the power of the year might get cut off in September or October. Is there anything that might happen in those months that you could address now?

I have to admit, I didn’t understand how Rabbit energy might mean disagreeing about the meaning of everything – that is, until last year. So many of us in 2023 were still purposely ignoring or misinterpreting the meaning of pertinent scientific facts. Another thing I never really thought about with the Rabbit is the potential for violence and how adept the Rabbit can be with it. I suppose with Roosters as your enemy, that makes sense. Rabbits have to be pushed beyond some point of no return to do violence, but once that happens, it’s on and you will not be ready.

Many Rabbits have had to purposely ignore or misinterpret the meaning of their experiences in order to survive. Maybe you have purposely ignored or misinterpreted the meaning of the Rabbit because it hurts too much to acknowledge that your social status can change in devastating ways based on your physical body. You don’t want to know that. I don’t either but now I know.

This isn’t just a Rabbit thing, everyone has things they avoid acknowledging, but the Rabbit might have coined the phrase “what you know could kill you”. You could die from knowing it. You could die from not acknowledging it.

I think Rabbits are often told how brave they are because of what we think they have endured. In America we like to celebrate survivors but I’d prefer to celebrate people not having to be perpetually resilient to survive. Before you tell people how brave and amazing they are, think about whether or not they had a choice. Yes they are brave and amazing, but what choice was there for them other than to accept what was done or given? Accept or fight for your life. Those are the usual choices a Rabbit starts off with. Persistence and resilience can only go so far. At a certain point the anger becomes part of the collective, and now it is.

Wood can dry up Water but this isn’t always a benefit to the Wood. It depends. If Rabbit is the sign that can contain fear, that’s Wood controlling Water. At times, Rabbits can be the bravest of the brave. I imagine that feat takes some serious dissociation. Also – when we identify someone’s commitment to having a life as bravery, I wonder if that makes sense. They are just trying to be themselves in spite of their physical (or other) limitations, just like all of us.

To be blunt, I worry that the Rabbit has been more impacted by Covid than any other sign. I don’t necessarily mean people born in the year of the Rabbit or even those who have a Rabbit in their Ba Zi. There are wider meanings to these symbols and what I’ve seen is that children and mothers are being damaged. I’m seeing people who may have limited mobility, living in group settings, and being infected. What I’m seeing often is the people who need the most care are the people we would very much like to ignore. I think this is because it makes us so uncomfortable to think of what our lives would be like if we were them. We would rather not think about those possibilities. We don’t like realizing how we might be letting people down in relationships of all kinds.

Maybe the collective anger of 2024 is embodied most by Tigers and Rabbits. When I say this I don’t mean that only Tigers and Rabbits are fighting back or picking fights, I mean that I think these two signs are carrying the energy of generations of women’s anger in them. It has taken years for some of us to be able to speak or think about the wrongs that were done, the expectations that we could never meet, and our dreams that were deemed unimportant or unrealistic. Still we persist.

In the first half of the year, March might slow you down, however it still may be easier to accomplish things. In the second half of the year progress will likely be slower.

For those who do have a Rabbit in their Ba Zi, this year there are a couple of signs that in March you could be staying at home more. If that was going to happen, who would you want to be around? Is home a safe and functional place for you? Do you have a support system for yourself?

September is the time when you might need that support the most. The Rooster has special privileges this year and as you know, that is a clash month every year for you. Some Rabbits may be reduced but others might get promoted. That’s the kind of thing you can’t say for sure until you look at the Ba Zi.

Rabbits can profit by focusing on the learning that is available in April, August and December. There is still work to be done between you and the Rat, meaning improving communication and giving acceptance. Explore your relationship with the Water element.

For almost all Rabbits in the Wood Dragon year, remote work is best if you can get it. A good activity for many Rabbits in 2024 is writing, marketing and advertising. You can do that for your own work or as a job. Get yourself out into the world through the written word or by way of social media. Activate your network of friends and family.

If this isn’t your favorite year Rabbit, you can still use it to get ready for the future.
